Ein illustrativer Erzähler und Zeitnehmer Willy Dorn, 1954 in Berlin geboren, entdeckte für sich die Insel Kreta vor mehr als 35 Jahren. Schon beim ersten Ankommen damals, mit der Fähre, bemächtigte ihn das Gefühl, heim zu kommen. Diesem Heimatgefühl folgend, besuchte der Künstler die Insel so oft wie möglich und verlegte vor nunmehr über zehn Jahren seinen Wohnsitz nach Kreta, wo er von seinen kretischen Freunden Wassilis Dornakis genannt wird. Willy Dorn hat viele Gegenden Griechenlands bereist und seine Eindrücke “dokumentarisch” in Reiseskizzen, lavierten Zeichnungen und Aquarellen festgehalten. Einen entscheidenden Einfluss auf seine Arbeiten hatten dabei seine häufigen Aufenthalte auf der Kykladen-Insel Santorini und sein “neues” Domizil Kreta. Der Kunsthistoriker Helge Bathelt sagte einmal über den Maler, er sei ein “Zeitnehmer”. Willy Dorn nimmt sich die Zeit, zu reisen, schöne Dinge zu leben und Schönes zu gestalten. Sich selbst bezeichnet der Künstler als “gnadenlosen aber hoffnungsvollen Romantiker”, der in all dieser neuzeitlichen Hyperschnelligkeit bewusst sein “Tempo” verlangsamt hat. Wann immer es die notwendigen Arbeiten möglich machen, vor Computer und Schreibtisch zu fliehen, ist er wandernderweise über viele Stunden und Tage unterwegs in der wilden Bergwelt der “Lefka Ori” (deutsch: die “Weißen Berge”), allein oder als Wanderführer mit kleinen Gruppen. Willy Dorn arbeitet vorzugsweise in Bilder-Serien. So kann er sich intensiv in ein selbst gestelltes Thema hinein arbeiten, sich technisch wie auch inhaltlich perfektionieren. Bekannt wurden seine ausdrucksstarken Bilder-Zyklen von Jahrhunderte alten und knorrigen Olivenbäumen oder die umfangreiche Darstellung von Kretas unterschiedlichen Küsten mit eingearbeiteten Elementen aus der klassisch-griechischen Mythologie. In seinem neuen Bilder-Zyklus setzt sich der Künstler humorvoll aber auch hintergründig mit den “Szenen einer Partnerschaft” auseinander. Reduziert auf zwei typisch griechisch blaue Stühle mit Bistro-Tisch stellt Willy Dorn all die vielseitigen und vielschichtigen Situationen einer lebendigen Partnerschaft dar. Willy Dorn ist kein abstrakter und kein abstrahierender Maler. Er möchte vielmehr mit seinen Bildern erlebte und durchlebte Geschichten von sich selbst und von seiner geliebten Insel Kreta in illustrativer Weise erzählen. Seine Themen sind Meeresküsten, bizarre und knorrige Olivenbäume sowie pittoreske kretische Naturlandschaften, die in akribischer Maltechnik und idealisierter Weise dargestellt bzw. neu interpretiert werden.
