I’m a Tanzanian Fashion and Interior Designer, Art Director & creative entrepreneur by profession. I’m deeply passionate about enabling the youth and helping young designers become more effective in their careers – a desire that filters through every aspect of my businesses. I enjoy what I do and I’m always pleased to work on different projects. I established Naledi in 2008 as an Interior Designer studio, but being inspired by all forms of design and creativity I found fashion a natural progression from interior design and soft furnishings. Over the last years I have had the opportunity to merge my two passions by working as Art Director in film and TV. Naledi which means "star” in Setswana is now an independent design company based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

I attended Limerick College of Art & Design from 1985-1989 where I studied Fine Art Sculpture, although initially it was a desire to study fashion design that drew me to the Art School in Limerick. I live and work near Skibbereen in West Cork where I am constantly inspired by the rugged coastline in this once copper rich area, the energy of the elements and the subtleties of the reflective light in this particular part of the country. Although I don’t work directly from the landscape, I feel its influence permeate my work. I work in both two and three dimensions. For me there is a huge sense of enjoyment and challenge with my physical approach to working. I would be traditional in that sense. I have always had a huge love of drawing and always try to bring that energy into my sculptures. The process of making some of my linear work is very much like three dimensional drawing. I work mainly with metals and inspiration often comes from the materials themselves, as recycled hot water cylinders and old copper piping are predominantly used in my recent work; this represents renewal and change, the transformation from one use to another, a process which will continue. The colours that are possible to achieve in the copper hold a particular fascination combined with the reflective light which changes constantly, bouncing off the sculptures bringing with it a life to the finished pieces. Balance and movement are essential elements of my work. Hence I try to capture the movement in a moment, a gesture which defines it. I also try to contrast the suggested bulk of form with a more seemingly delicate support, encompassing vulnerability and resilience. The combination of materials which allows the pieces to move and sway physically; This in turn enables the viewer to play a more active role in their experience with my work. I want to create a sense of dialogue with my viewer and move them away from their thoughts for a momentarily.

Interior design has filled my heart and mind since I was a young student in the third grade. From that point I have always loved the idea of being the one to bring beautiful aesthetics to those around me. I have had many great expereince in the design industry and am always looking for ways to grow and meet other creative influences along the way. I have a background in retail which with infusion through schooling and other avenues have lead me to grow a passion for retail and hospitality commercial design. I am a believer that design is all around us, and it is my chance as a designer to take the things around me and infuse them with the interior dreams and visions of others.

I moved to Oakland last year from Monterey, CA where I was born and raised. In the past 5 years I have been to 10+ countries, worked in a couple, and now I am back in the US focusing on my Chemistry degree. I have worked at many different companies in the USA, Australia and New Zealand, so I have a wide variety of business management skills and a strong work ethic. I have 10+ years of customer service experience working in hospitality, mixed media art and IT/AV. I have been working with computers and electronics for 20+ years. I am fully proficient in all of Microsoft Office, Microsoft OS, Mac and most all major Linux distros. I am able to install all hardware and software for all these OS on desktop and laptop computers. As a digital artist I have been using Adobe Photoshop since I can remember. I am not 100% on the whole suite, but I have had my hundreds of hours working in the beautiful Adobe series. Most of my work when I was younger was fixing up photos or adding some layers. In the past 3-5 years I have started using GIMP, Adobe, Autodesk, and some other simple apps/programs to draw from blank pages or add on to photos. I have taken over 100 units at California community college as I've changed my major twice to adapt to my career choice. I started in Nursing but it was too impacted, so I switched to Ecology. After a few semesters working on a BS in Ecology, I realized my passion was where I am now, Chemistry, IT and art. I'm able to quickly adapt to new working environments and conditions. I am energetic & hard working. I have excellent communication skills on the phone, in emails, texts and in person. Thank you for your time to view my portfolio.
